Par, Under Par, Sub-Par?

Sub-Par? Is that even a word?

According to the urban dictionary, it means not acceptable, below an acceptable level.

But isn’t “under par” in golf  a good thing and “over par” the bad thing? So wouldn’t sub-par be good?

Ok, admittedly I’m not into sports and the most experience I’ve had with golf is getting the little ball past the windmill and into the clown’s mouth.

Supposedly, “sub par”  has nothing to do with golf and has been adopted by the financial industry as meaning ” trading below face value”.

Still sounds made up to me.
